Hunter jobs are becoming a real job in Australia, a new report has found.
Photo: Andrew MearesThe Hunter Jobs Program has been hailed by employers and industry groups for the positive outcomes it has seen for hunters.
But as it comes under increased scrutiny, the program is finding itself under pressure to explain why it was a success, given the growing criticism it has received over the past two years.
The program was set up to make hunting a lucrative career option for people in remote and rural communities in Victoria and Queensland.
“In many remote and urban communities, there’s a lack of opportunities in terms of employment opportunities, so Hunter jobs is a way of giving people that opportunity,” said Chris Tinsley, the federal director of the Rural Hunter Employment Program.
“The program is a really good idea and it is a good way to help people in these communities,” he said.
“They are looking for jobs, but they’re also finding opportunities and opportunities for themselves and their families.”
I think it’s really important for the government to look at how it’s done in the community and how it can be replicated in the wider community.
“There are so many opportunities for hunters out there that the government needs to look into.”
It is hoped the program will continue to grow and become more popular in remote areas, with some local communities already employing a number of Hunters as full-time jobs.
But while the program has received positive reviews from the community, it is also being criticized for being too expensive for hunters, with a large part of the money going to the State Government.
“It’s a very expensive program,” said Mr Tinsleys.
“We have to ask ourselves why it’s there and what the cost is.”
Is it worth it?
Is it sustainable?
How can we make it sustainable?
“Mr Tinsles points out that hunters need to be prepared to pay $50 per year for a Hunter job, and $250 per year to a hunter as a hunting coach.”
If you are a hunter, it’s not going to be cheap, you have to pay for your own gear and you have the expenses associated with the program, but that’s it,” he explained.”
Hunters in remote communities are just going to have to find other ways to survive, other ways of earning income.
“Mr Tinson said there was a “lot of good in” the program but he said it was important for Hunter communities to be aware of the cost.”
A lot of the Hunter job is paid for by the Federal Government, and it’s also paid for in the way that it is now, which is through the State,” he told ABC Radio.”
When it’s the state that’s paying, it makes it a little bit more challenging for communities to find employment and to support the workforce in their communities.
“He said the program was not a “black or white” decision, and the State could choose to “change the way it is done” or “leave it as it is”.
Mr Tinley said the State would not be able to do so without the Federal government’s backing.”
That’s something we will consider as we go forward and work with the State to make sure that they’re able to make that decision,” he added.
