AUSTRALIAN hunters will get $52 million in federal jobs to help them hunt for wild pelts.
Key points:The Government says the hunt for the world’s most coveted bird is vital to conservation and biodiversityKey pointsThe Government is investing $20 million in the hunt with $20 billion earmarked for research and developmentThe Government has said it wants to help ensure hunters can continue to hunt in the best possible conditions and has set up a new hunting committee to work with industry and government on research and productionThe Hunter Bill, which will be introduced into Parliament this month, is a direct response to the plight of wild animals and the loss of their habitats around Australia.
It was passed in December 2016, shortly after the Federal Government pledged to invest $20m into the hunt, which has long been seen as Australia’s most lucrative wildlife species.
“This is an incredibly important and valuable role for hunters,” Environment Minister Scott Emerson said at the time.
“The success of our hunt will have a major impact on our wildlife conservation.”
The Government will spend $20.5 million in 2017-18 to create a Hunter Council to oversee the hunt and help develop new and improved methods of hunting.
Key measures include the establishment of a new Hunters’ Management and Research Committee to advise on research, production and training of new hunting methods.
It also intends to develop an additional $20-million for the hunt’s science and technology support, and a $10-million grant for the creation of a regional research institute.
In a statement to the ABC, Agriculture Minister Scott Morrison said the Hunter Bill was a “first step” to creating a sustainable and viable hunt.
“It will support the Hunter Council and the research and technology development of new, improved hunting methods that will ensure our hunters have access to the pelts they need for the welfare of their families and our native wildlife,” he said.
“We’ve already invested a significant amount in hunting, and we will continue to do so.”
The Hunter Council will be responsible for ensuring the Hunter’s Conservation and Management Plan is implemented.
The Hunter’s Management and Production Plan is a detailed management plan for the Australian Wild Pelts Program that aims to ensure wild pelting and hunting continues to flourish in Australia.
The Government hopes the plan will help keep Australia’s wild pelter population up to date and will provide certainty and support to the industry in the long-term.
“There is a strong commitment to ensure the survival of the Australian wild pelted game bird population,” the Government said.
